I earned my BA and MA degrees in Music Education from California State University, Los Angeles and a Doctor of Education Degree from UCLA. I am a lifetime resident of San Gabriel and attended San Gabriel schools as did my brothers, wife and children.
I was first elected to the San Gabriel Unified School District Board of Education in 1999 and served two terms through 2007. I was re-elected in 2013 and am currently serving in my fifth term on the Board. I am also a member of the California School Board Association (CSBA) Delegate Assembly representing Region 23A. I have been a presenter at the CSBA Annual Education Conference and continue to actively participate in statewide academic seminars and programs. Additionally, I serve on the Governing Board of the San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupational Program (SGVROP). As a lifetime learner and educator, I continue to offer my knowledge, experience and insight to our students, schools, school district and the community at large.
In my 50 years in education, I’ve taught in the classroom at every level of education including elementary, middle school, high school, college and university. While serving as an Elementary Instrumental Musical Specialist, I drove a modified school bus that served as a "mobile band room” for the Rowland Unified School District. This innovative program, which served multiple school sites in the district, won the prestigious “Golden Bell Award” from CSBA.
I retired as Dean of the School of Creative Arts and Applied Sciences at Long Beach City College where I had responsibility for 22 diverse academic programs. I still serve as conductor of the Long Beach City College Evening Wind Symphony and as Cantor at St. Anthony Church in San Gabriel. I am also the founder and musical director of the Band of the California Battalion, a fully reenacted Union Civil War Brass Band that is celebrating its 35th year as an ensemble (www. civilwarband.us).
I have been married to my wife Mary for 52 years. We have 2 adult children, Michael, and Andrea (Andi), three granddaughters, Michael’s identical twins, Ava and Abby and Andi’s 2-year-old daughter, Maddie. In my spare time, I enjoy my grandchildren and supporting their activities, traveling with Mary and friends abroad and on cruises and trips in our beloved motorhome. I am a voracious reader and especially enjoy reading techno-thrillers!

Goals

Continue to support Health and Wellness initiatives for all students and staff
Create innovative instructional environments that prepare our students for future success
Provide necessary resources and support services and for every student, “All means All”

We are committed to providing learning experiences that inspire students and teachers while strengthening their connections to the community.
Every child deserves the support needed to succeed. I will strengthen programs that promote student wellness and address achievement gaps caused by homelessness, disabilities, language barriers, and other challenges. “All Means All”—every student deserves the opportunity to thrive, regardless of circumstance.
Teachers require a secure and supportive work environment, sufficient instructional resources, professional advancement opportunities, and—above all—respect. All district initiatives should reinforce the essential relationship between teachers and students.
Civil discourse requires respectful and honest dialogue, even when there is disagreement. Educational institutions can foster this environment by modeling constructive conflict resolution and involving students in the arts, athletics, student government, debate, community service and other collaborative activities. Such experiences cultivate active listening, cooperation, adaptability, teamwork and the pursuit of collaborative objectives without the fear of hostility or intimidation.
